Election 2004: What`s Going On?

Posted by Tory, September 26, 2004 on 8:00 pm | In Amusements |

We lost our thousandth American yesterday. I don’t know how many Iraqis, which is a shame, because our people and their people have something huge in common: none of them had anything to do with terrorism. None of them had anything to do with the attacks on September 11. None of them had anything do Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, the USS Cole, Al Qaeda, Osama or anthrax. All of them were totally innocent of all the crap that happened to us while Bush has been president, and yet all of them died.

BartCop wrote something that really drove this home for me: one thousand families saw a government car pull into their driveway. That must be a bad feeling.

And Bush still hasn’t been to a funeral.

Some people don’t like the way the left has been keeping track of the death toll. They think it’s morbid. They think it’s better to trust President Bush and look away when another American dies in Bush’s stupid awful endless war. They think we *like* keeping track. They don’t get it. We count because we have to. We count because so many are dying that the newspapers don’t put it on the front page anymore. We count because if three Americans were killed last night and we can’t be bothered to know about it then something worse than war is going on.

Bush’s war (send a tiny force into Afghanistan and a huge force arbitrarily into Iraq) is a failure. Bush’s economic policy (big tax cuts for the super-rich and big deficits for everybody) is a failure. Bush’s education policy (give money to the schools that do the best on tests, so the troubled schools get worse and the successful schools get better) is a failure. Bush’s health policy (more money and less hassle for drug companies and corporations, and less money and more hassle for individuals) is a failure.

But somehow Bush’s campaign is making this election about Vietnam. And SOMEHOW KERRY IS NOT WINNING ON THIS ISSUE!

I don’t have caps big enough to express this. For some reason, Kerry let Bush decide what the speeches and the ads and the news stories were going to be about, and it was going to be about Vietnam. And Kerry didn’t so much as clear his throat about how broke, stupid and sick the average American is getting.

Then, for some reason, on the issue of Vietnam, between a draft-dodging, daddy-assisted dude gone AWOL from a posh cushy National Guard unit and a swift boat sailing decorated volunteer hero, THE HERO IS LOSING!

God in heaven, does Kerry not want to win? I was in Iowa for the caucus, and I remember in January he wanted it pretty goddam bad. He mortgaged his house. He gambled everything. Hell, he missed enough goddam votes in the Senate. But now he’s acting like he can’t be bothered to throw a punch.

I`m a little upset about it.

But…

I hear from his campaign that he’s laying low on purpose — that he’s got some massive ace up his sleeve and he’s going to annihilate the Bush campaign when the time is right. Maybe he does. I don’t know much. Maybe the only way to topple the Rove-mobile is to surprise it and give it no time to regroup.

Maybe there are new documents confirming Bush’s long absence from his National Guard unit. Maybe there’s a piece on 60 Minutes at 8 PM tonight about it. Maybe the tide really is going to turn.

Cross your fingers.

Things really did look like they could change, didn`t they? I`m ashamed to have some people as my countrymen. Doesn`t do any good; doesn`t solve any problems; in fact, all it does is go against one of this country`s most basic principles. But it`s still how I feel.

Name a Source of Stress. Survey Says…

Posted by Tory, September 26, 2004 on 8:00 pm | In Amusements |

Okay. I’ve been feeling kinda whiny lately about various things, and although I realize that my problems are self-imposed and really pretty trifling, and I have a huge safety net with my family and I ain’t going over the cliff any time soon, I feel I may whine at ANY MOMENT.

But everybody’s got problems — why am I the one who gets whine privilieges? So what I want to hear is:

What’s going on right now that’s stressing you out?

Anything is fair game. Bonus points for things that were stressing you out that recently got resolved.

  1. I have issues that began to physically manifest, and I was getting over them for a while, and I was doing all good and stuff… But in the past week, things have gotten pretty bad. Isn`t interesting - as soon as classes start back up, my issues reemerge…

  2. Money - the lack of same, I should say, that is preventing my planning for my upcoming run for the (Canadian) border should GWB win in November, which is the thing that is TRULY stressing me out.

  3. TEH BUNNAH, well you made me feel ashamed to gripe!! :) Good luck with the funky mole. TAKE THAT SUCKER OFF. And thank you for your advice. I decided he was worth it, indeed.

  4. I`ve been trying desperately to get up enough money to finish my degree, which is IMPOSSIBLE, seeing as how my parents won`t help me and I can`t find a job because…here`s the funny part: I haven`t had a steady job! Oh yeah, and the recurring melanoma (I had it last year, and now another funky mole showed up) combined with the lack of health insurance, lack of work, and the love of my life is 3000 miles away. Yeah, things are peachy! To Kat: decide if this person is worth the pain of uprooting. If he is, go for it no holds barred.

  5. Certainly nothing as scary as cancer…but my boyfriend got a great job offer in Florida…which is about 1300 miles away from where we live now. I moved home last year specifically to be near my two octegenarian grandmothers who won`t last long and my father, who might drop from a heart attack any day. This is the man I finally found to marry - to spend the rest of my life with, and he wants to be in Jacksonville by October 1st. I, on the other hand, have no job offer, no friends or family there and cannot live without him. I`m trying to decide how to completely uproot my life, find a job, a place to live, etc. and remain an open caring supportive individual to him. Oh yeah, did I mention I just moved into a new house a month ago and just started a semester of graduate school?

  7. Yipes.. all that makes mine sound way less important.. I`ve been struggling with my ailing PC for a week now, all attempts to fix it have only made the problems worse. I`m looking at a reformat of the C drive today, ifyouknowhatImean. Ugh. Then, of course, there`s always the worry of money.. I hate my f-in` job and the people I wait on, plus they don`t know how to tip.. so what`s the incentive to work hard? Luckily I just got my financial aid and will hopefully be getting a loan check soon.. I can start putting money in my savings so that I can move to the university town at the end of the year.

  9. I was told that I probably had pancreatic cancer. The surgery and test results came back in my favor, no cancer. Much stress…

  10. One of my best friends was just in the hospital with a condition that might have killed her instantly in the last two months; my step-grandmother just died of the same thing, and another friend died of it in high school. Two days ago my other friend would have been 23 if he hadn`t died in an accident last fall. I worry about the mortality of my friends, and of myself–it seems the world is suddenly fraught with danger, when I know that from now on there are more people who are/will be my friends who will die than who will be born. I am almost paralyzed by fear these days. And I don`t know how to go about my life feeling this way. There`s no good conclusion to come to, no realization that will make me feel better. So that`s stressing me out.

  11. I have a boss who`s generally known as, well I don`t even know what–arrogant? obnoxious? rude? a…bitch? So my job is going well, great even, but always in the back of my mind is this voice wondering “When`s the other shoe gonna drop? Hmmm? She sure is ACTING nice, isn`t she?” So it`s weird, because I actually like what I`m doing and have had nothing but pleasant experiences with her. ANYWAY, so we`re in a meeting the other day and I says to myself, self I says: what is she really IS nice? All of these other impressions could have been wrong. Instead of approaching her with a vague yet chilling sense of dread, why don`t I reorient and actually assume she`s just what she appears to be in OUR dealings. And I actually felt my neck relax. Okay. So this isn`t that stressful. But I was proud of myself for acting like a grown-up for a change.

  12. My mother, who has a vague grasp of English (she`s German) has an AOL account that I pay for. She was getting alot of those phony email that ask for your information and credit card numbers. So every day I was getting 3 or 4 forwarded spams and and equal number of panicked emails from my mother asking if she should respond. I was in terror that she would do what they ask and end up with her credit cards maxed out or something. AOL wouldn`t help me, because I wasn`t her. So I installed AOL on my machine, and now I check her mail every day and delete her spam. Oy.

  13. Heh - save your money. Canada`s got natural resources and cheap drugs — George Bush`s Amurrica would be invading them too by 2007.
